Professor Jerome Sarris

Scientific Advisor of Fiji Kava
With over 20 years of experience in the natural products and plant medicines field, having led many plant-medicine clinical trials (in particular studying kava), Professor Sarris is the leading authority in Australia and New Zealand on kava and various natural medicines, and has recently been appointed as Fiji Kava’s Scientific Advisor. Professor Sarris has published the results of his clinical trials in high impact medical and psychiatric journals, showing a significant reduction of anxiety and stress in this research. He also has found no compelling evidence of water extracted kava showing any major issues on the liver.

Professor Sarris is a NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) Clinical Research Fellow, Professor of Integrative Mental Health and Deputy Director of NICM Health Research at Western Sydney University, Australia. He is also an honorary Principal Research Fellow with the Department of Psychiatry at Melbourne University.

As well as being our Scientific Advisor to Fiji Kava, Professor Sarris is also a Scientific Advisor to medicinal cannabis company ANTG.

Watch Professor Jerome Sarris present key findings and research regarding kava in the videos below.

The World’s First Commercial Kava Tissue Culture Laboratory

In September 2019, we commissioned the World’s first kava tissue culture laboratory in Levuka, Ovalau Fiji, with the aim to ensure Fiji produces world-class, disease-free, high quality kava to meet the growing demand for kava from international markets. We see tissue culture as a long-term solution for creating a sustainable and growing kava industry. This tissue culture lab is an important aspect of the standardization of kavalactone profiles in the kava plants, from which we have derived desirable profiles which enhance therapeutic benefits such as calming and soothing nerves, inducing sleep and increasing muscle relaxation. We will grow disease free plantlets and clone Noble kava plants which possess these desirable traits, thereby improving both the quality and yield of kava.

“Kava is enjoying a resurgence in western markets, and the tissue culture technology that we are developing at this plant establishes a platform for guaranteed quality to help shape the global resurgence of kava. Not only will it have major sustainability benefits of kava for the industry, but the tissue culture lab will provide Fiji Kava with a unique differentiator and leading edge.”

– Zane Yoshida, Founder and Managing Director of Fiji kava

Clinical Trials

Our kava products are produced by high-quality GMP. Research exists showing that Noble kava can be effective in reducing anxiety and stress:

The first double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over clinical trial took place in 2008 2009 in Australia, with the results demonstrating that kava (250mg of kavalactones) significantly reduced anxiety over a 3-week period in 60 adults (Sarris et al., 2009).

A follow-up 6-week study in 75 participants diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder further demonstrated the effect of kava (120mg-240mg of kavalactones) in significantly reducing anxiety compared to placebo (Sarris et al., 2013a).

Notably, in both studies there were no significant effects of kava on liver function or any adverse liver effects (Sarris et al., 2013b).

Together this data indicates that not only is a water-soluble root extract of a noble cultivar of kava a fast-acting effective anxiolytic, but it also produces less unfavourable side effects compared to conventional pharmacotherapies, and is (in these small samples) safe on the liver.

The medicinal benefits of kava have been traditionally used in Pacific Islander and Western herbal medicine to promote sleep, relax the body and calm and soothe the nerves.

Our kava possesses specific % levels of kavalactones and other desirable profiles found from our 13 year of research into 200 varieties of kava across the South Pacific.

As well as being TGA and FDA compliant and listed as a complementary medicine in Australia, kava is also sold as a dietary supplement in most other international markets.
